Child Labor and Sweatshops are a Current Problem in the Fashion Industry Many societies face the much overlooked problem of child labor and sweatshops in the fashion industry. Recently, Americans were stunned to learn that their apple pie sweetheart, Kathie Lee Gifford was associated with the exploitation of underage workers in Honduras. Giffords story began the resurgence of knowledge of the growing problem of sweatshops in todays society. Contrary to popular belief, sweatshops still exist across the world in both third world countries and super powers such as America. Sweatshops incorporate the inhumane exploitation of workers, many of whom are underage, by providing extremely low wages as well as expecting unrealistic†¦show more content†¦The sweatshop problem has been acknowledged by the government as a definite problem in todays society. President Clinton created a Task Force and signed a conduct code to help assuage the situation of those entrapped in the sweatshops. The Congressional Mandate encourages a sense of social responsibility in o rder to eliminate hazardous conditions to the physical and mental health of the child (The Apparel Industry and Codes of Conduct 2). However, according to David B. Wilson, a critic for Labor Alerts1, the Task Force fell short of the intended goals. Due to the stubbornness of the fashion industry, many of the terms agreed to are filled with loopholes. For example, the Congressional Mandate dictates that Companies shall pay the local minimum wage or prevailing industry wage (Wilson 1). However, third world countries often lack a minimum wage and those which do have a minimum wage are set well below the basic needs in order to attract investment by foreign companies. Realistically, the fashion industry merely complies with the substandard laws that have already been created. (Wilson 1) The Task Force Agreement and Congressional Mandate ultimately result in the legalization of the practices considered to be most inhumane, and they serve as a seal of approval for such practices. Although Congress demonstrated the need for legislation, the result proves the need for increased regulation and strict measures to ensure the fair and equal treatment ofShow MoreRelatedThe Clothing Industry Has Changed Changing Society Essay1733 Words   |  7 PagesThe clothing industry has changed rapidly in the past couple of decades. Mountain Walking in the Andes Essay Example For Students

Mountain Walking in the Andes Essay Dear Pinyot, I couldnt believe that I won the competition! And I was given a chance to travel to any of the destinations they mentioned as tracking rare mountain for gorillas in Uganda, bush walking with guides in Kenya and there were so much more but I chose to travel to the Andes on a major treks with expert guides who will just be following behind you and will seek if you need any help just in case you are lost or thirsty/ hungry. Major treks are where you go mountain walking for six to eight hours in a day. I chose to go to mountain walking because I like to go to places, which are very quiet and peaceful, and uncrowded because I want to be in a place where you can get away from your everyday problems and feel unstressed for the first time because of work, etc. and places where you can feel so lonely and free for the first time. All thanks to my best friend Charles I won the competition he made me enter it in the first place and he told me that I won!! This is what happened It was in the morning and I just had woken up, The phone rings and I answer, Hullo, Hussein here? The voice on the other end asks for Mr. Moechsin and I reply, This is he. The voice says she is calling to remind me of my 4:00 PM dental appointment. I sigh and tell her I will be there. It was four oclock already, I enter the building and walked over to the elevator; I pushed the up button and patiently wait. The elevator door promptly opened and I got in. I pushed the button with a two on it and the doors closed. Once on the second floor I exited the elevator and immediately I could smell the mixture of a mix of toothpaste and the smell you usually smell in hospitals as you enter them. And I bleached out in the hall even before I go into Dr. Abduls office. As soon as I open the outer door, the blast of cool air from the air conditioner hits me in the face making me shiver all over. I walk in and add my name to the list on the sign in sheet. The secretary saw me and will let me know if the doctor will be ready in a minute. While I waited in the waiting room for the dental assistant in her blue uniform to call out my name, I look at the fish in the large blue tank in the corner of the room silently while I wait my turn. Then I turned and saw a photo album sitting on a coffee table. I picked it up only to see pictures of decaying teeth and gums. I quickly closed the book and shudder at the thought as I rolled my tongue over my teeth and checking them if theyre all right. The nurse called my name and I entered the inner office and sit in the brown leather chair looking at all the shiny stainless steel equipment. As I sit down the bright overhead light, then I realized, its my turn. But then Charlie jumped with excitement and told me the news. I was horrified there in moment. So then the day finally came for me. I was ready, more ready than ever. The company gave me a first class ticket to chilies and it was my first time on first class on any plane and I couldnt wait to step in that plane. I was really excited to go!! As you know that this is my first trip to South America, I dont know what life is there like. As I got in the plane the hostess treated me with fully respect and they congratulated me for winning, I had an exquisite meals and it was very comfortable. As we finally landed in Chile, I grabbed my pack bag and as I stepped out of the plane hearing the hostess saying thank you for flying Singapore airlines I looked outside and the view was amazing, it was like a new world to Ive never been before, the atmosphere was warm, friendly and bustling, when I was there I felt so secure and the colours were vibrant and I never experienced to go mountain walking for such a long time. The guides greeted me and showed a little bit of Santiago, Chile and took me to the inter-continental hotel. We were supposed to start the next morning but I wanted to see the city first. International Marketplace EssayAs I got the water bottle out of my bag and started drinking it all of a sudden I saw this rattlesnake crawling towards and besides me with its tail sounded like a South American musical instrument. I was really horrified and shocked. I couldnt move! The other guider told me to stay quiet and calm, and not to be afraid of it, as he crawled slowly towards the snake very quiet and straightly grabbed the snake extremely fast and threw it away. It was a beautiful snake with its skin striped with chestnut brown, emerald green and jet-black. I stood up and continued my journey. When I was walking along my journey, I felt so relaxed and unwind as the atmosphere and the weather began to change into a light-hearted and cosy type. And I always forget my everyday problems I had. While I was walking I felt so secure, excited and exhilarated all at the same time. I have experienced the beauty of nature and I find it spiritually uplifting. After three hours of walking I stopped onto an area that was so different and unique then the last couple of hours I have been walking. It was an area, which was so colourful, vibrant, bright and glorious, and the same time. I reached my bag and got out my water bottle, and I drank for a bit. As I was drinking I walked a few paces towards and I sat down on a steep, flat rock. I looked around very amazed why this was different than the other places. I looked around again, I was surrounded by lots of palm trees all around me and on the right of me there was a small pond, and on the left of me there was soft, light chestnut brown san and the atmosphere was safe, awe-inspiring and very lively. The place was very beautiful. I just figured out that I just ended my journey. So one of the guiders came up to me very slowly and said that my journey have ended and we should be getting ready because the jeep is coming on its way. So I wet myself in the pond and I dried myself with the towel and I put everything back in my bag. You can hear the sound of the wind and eagles flying about in the sky. Finally the jeep came the guiders went in and I stood there outside to have a glimpse of the mountain one last time, then I went in the jeep and we drove off. We drove passed a small forest where the atmosphere is sophisticated and you hear the sounds of animals such as monkeys then we reached to another city. I was very hungry and extremely tired so when we reached the hotel I straightly went to the restaurant, after all the staff of the company who gave me this trip to Chile congratulate me in my attempt, and I ate all these spicy food but I forgot what theyre called again but it was very delicious. After that I went up I m my room in the hotel and slept straightaway. Mountain walking is very healthy but can be very tiring. I recommend this journey to people who gets stressed in their works easily and people who gets many problems everyday so he/she can get away from it because this journey is going to be very relaxing and will make them unwind and comfort them. Or to people who wants to do something different in their life and want something very adventurous. I had so much fun in this trip and I felt like an out going type of person, which I am not. I wish you were there with me so we both would have even more fun together. I loved this journey because I felt very RELAXED!! Best wishes, Hussein

Intubation and Mechanical Ventilation of the Asthmatic Patient in Respiratory

Table of Contents Abstract Introduction Methods Results Discussion Conclusion References Abstract The title of the article gives a clear idea of the research question to be investigated. It is clearly and meaningfully worded to give readers a clear picture of the study. The first author works in the Emergency Department of Case Western Reserve School of Medicine, Cleveland, Ohio.Advertising We will write a custom critical writing sample on Intubation and Mechanical Ventilation of the Asthmatic Patient in Respiratory specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More The second author works in the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care. Medicine, Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, Chicago, Illinois. The last author works in the Department of Emergency Medicine, American University of Beirut, Beirut, Lebanon. The authors have expertise in emergency cases involving pulmonary and respiratory conditions. The study reviewed randomi sed controlled trial articles that were obtained via online searches (Brenner, Corbridge Kazzi, 2009). A total of 5 randomised controlled trials were reviewed on intubation, but no trial was considered on mechanical ventilation. Introduction The authors of his article did not state any study hypothesis or question. They mentioned the intensity of the problem in their introductory paragraphs. However, they did not address the significance of studying or reviewing the data for intubation and mechanical ventilation of acute asthmatic patients. The investigators did not give any predictions before doing the reviews. Evidence-based study reviews need to have the significance of the studies, and clear predictions of the outcome. This was a big shortcoming on the part of the authors. Several studies have been carried out to investigate and report clinical relevant data on intubation and mechanical ventilation of acute asthmatic patients (McFadden Jr, 2003). A study noted that there are ab out 2 million emergency visits by patients with acute asthma annually. Other studies have recognised the importance of intubation and mechanical ventilation in patients with acute asthma. Intubation and mechanical ventilation have been shown to reduce mortality cases in patients with acute asthma attacksAdvertising Looking for critical writing on health medicine? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More Most of the research sources used by the authors were recent (5-10 years). They gave the authors of the past research credit by citing them appropriately. While there is no condemnation of past research findings, this area of research has had controversies. The controversies have led to more studies being done to ascertain the clinical truth (Shapiro, 2001). Methods The study review did term searches online. The terms were intubation and mechanical ventilation. The intubation search yielded 41 randomised controlled trials and 6 meta-an alyses. Only 5 randomised controlled trials were used for reviews in the study. The mechanical ventilation search yielded 5 randomised controlled trials and 4 meta-analyses. All the randomised controlled trials and meta-analyses were not considered for review. The authors reviewed literature from the five randomised controlled trials for intubation. Results The authors made sense of the research findings by interpreting them appropriately. From the literature review of the 5 randomised controlled trials, the authors chose seven (7) key areas to be addressed. Their choices were based on their clinical experience. The key areas addressed were: prevention of intubation, criteria for intubation, intubation techniques, appropriate ventilator settings, post intubation management, management of ventilated patient and prevention and treatment of complications. Discussion The authors’ discussion encompassed comparison to other research studies on the subject. The authors recognised th e effort by other researchers in finding ways to prevent intubation, and finding the criteria for intubation. They also addressed the needs of ventilation in a patient with acute asthma. The authors discussed the issues on post intubation management, an issue that has been studied by past researches extensively. Their last area to discuss was prevention and treatment of complications arising from mechanical ventilation and intubation.Advertising We will write a custom critical writing sample on Intubation and Mechanical Ventilation of the Asthmatic Patient in Respiratory specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Research has demonstrated that complications arise in patients who have undergone intubation and mechanical ventilation. Research recommends appropriate procedures for dealing with such complications. Appropriate management of complications helps to save lives of patients (Lougheed, Fisher O’Donnell, 2006). The authors hav e failed to mention the limitations and biases, thus they have failed in giving their verdict on the degree of clinical relevance of the studies. The authors only used 5 randomised controlled trials from intubation searches. They rejected the other trials that were found and all the meta-analyses articles. In addition, the authors did not review randomised controlled trial and meta-analyses articles found on mechanical ventilation. They did not give the criterion for selecting the articles. The number of articles used for the review was too few to give good conclusion on the subject. In addition, the absence of reviews of articles on mechanical ventilation made the review weak. Conclusion The article is quite relevant to respiratory professional care. The article discusses seven key points that are of significance to respiratory professional care. The authors have detailed the processes of intubation and mechanical ventilation in patients with acute asthma. The authors have also det ailed the appropriate actions to be taken when complications arise from intubation and mechanical ventilation procedures. The article gives crucial information relevant to professionals in respiratory care. References Brenner, B., Corbridge, T., Kazzi, A. (2009). DIY Websites 10 Web Design Tips That Make Your Site Look Professional

Building a do-it-yourself (DIY) website provides several advantages. You have complete control over your site, can personalize it to your tastes, and save your budget. However, creating DIY websites that look professional and can compete with developer-built sites can be tricky without any training.Fortunately, if you take the time to learn a few web design best practices, your own site can come out looking top-notch. Even if you have no experience with creating websites, many of these tips are very simple to implement, especially on a platform such as WordPress. In this post, well introduce you to ten site elements you can incorporate to make your online space look professional.Lets get to it! Color can translate a lot about your brand. Too many colors that make your website seem chaotic could project a sense of disorganization and indecisiveness. Instead, pick one main color, an accent color, then stick with neutrals. A tool such as Coolors can help you generate color schemes quickl y and easily. To help you nail your color choices, you can follow our guide to website color schemes.2. Leave plenty of white space to prevent cluttered pages and postsWhite space refers to the blank areas on your sites pages. They may not necessarily be white in color (negative space is an alternative description you can use), but these open spaces help prevent your site from looking cluttered and confusing to visitors:Overall, a cleaner aesthetic helps users easily find what theyre looking for as soon as they arrive on your site. You can also use this design strategy to your advantage by directing users to  Subscribe or  Buy Now  buttons through the use of white space.3. Choose a legible font to ensure readabilityFancy scripts or graphic lettering might seem like a professional element to add. However, dont confuse professionalism with complexity or cost. Just because you have to pay for a custom font and add it to your site doesnt mean its high-end. Instead, prioritize legib ility:If your users cant read your site, it doesnt matter how much effort you put into acquiring your flashy typography. Keep your websites main purpose – to deliver information – at the forefront. For best results, pick two fonts and pair them together.4. Add high-quality personal photos to provide authenticityImages are an excellent way to improve your sites content. However, stuffing your site full of stock photos isnt a smart practice. Quality is far more important than quantity here. Personal photos seem more genuine, and can help build trust with your users:Even so, you dont want to just slap a grainy selfie up on your website and call it good. Low-quality images will also have a negative impact on your users perceptions of your site, so pay attention to features such as lighting and framing when taking and posting photos.5. Include clear navigation and search functionality to help visitors find what they needWhether your site has one page or dozens, your users ne ed to be able to find their way around. Visitors come to your site for a reason, and if they cant find what they need theyre more likely to leave than to go digging. This is why clear navigation is essential:Adding easy-to-use navigation will enable users to quickly get where they want and need to go. Also, including site search functionality can help them quickly find posts or pages anywhere across your site.6. Craft a well-written About page to build user trust and loyaltyBuilding a home page and providing information about your brands products or services are probably at the forefront of your mind when it comes to your sites content. However, your About page plays a key role on your website too:By sharing your brands story, mission, and values, you can humanize it to create a sense of trust and loyalty among your users. This can help give you an edge over your competitors, as people are more likely to stick with brands who share their values.7. Incorporate Call to Action (CTA) bu ttons to boost your conversion rateIf you want to increase conversions, you should make it as easy as possible for users to convert. This is why so many professional sites have CTA buttons that say things such as  Subscribe,  Sign Up,  or  Buy Now:Fortunately, if youre building DIY websites with WordPress, you can now easily add buttons in the Block Editor without the need for a plugin or custom code. This makes it easy for you to add actionable and converting elements for your mailing list, memberships, products, and practically anything else you can think of.8. Keep your headers and footers consistent to build brand recognitionWhenever your users need a product or service, you want them to think of your brand first. This is why brand recognition is key. Consistently using the same header and footer across your site is a smart opportunity to start making a strong impression on your users:Its especially helpful if your brands logo is included in one or both of these content areas. This important piece of your websites identity is key to creating a recognizable brand.9. Prioritize mobile responsiveness to reach more usersIf youve ever pulled up a website on your phone and found you couldnt read it because the text was too large or too small, you know how frustrating a lack of mobile responsiveness is. Your users feel the same way, and will likely abandon your mobile site if it doesnt adjust to their screen size:With mobile search now a significant source of conversions, and responsiveness factoring into Googles algorithm, this isnt an element you want to overlook. While in the past making your WordPress website mobile responsive was tough, practically every theme worth its salt is now ready to roll. For example, our entire collection of themes look great on mobile devices, although there are myriad to choose from.10. Provide easy-to-use contact forms to help users get in touchAnother feature professional websites all have in common is easy access to the brands contact information, such as an address, phone number, and email. However, you can make it even easier for users to reach you by providing a contact form:You might display this form on its own page or in your footer or sidebar across your site for easy access. There are several plugins you can use to create forms in WordPress, such as Contact Form 7 or Gravity Forms. Some page builders – such as Elementor – include quality tools to help build forms right out of the box, and plugins such as Jetpack also include basic functionality for displaying forms.ConclusionWith more website-building platforms popping up almost by the day, DIY websites are on the rise. Saving money and taking control by designing your own site may seem attractive, but if your website turns out looking unprofessional and untrustworthy, your brand might suffer for it. These 10 tips will make your DIY #website look like it was built by a pro 🔠¨ #WordPress Click To Tweet Fortunately, the re are a few aspects of web design you can easily implement on your site to up the professional-looking quality. Creating clean visuals with a limited color palette and ample white space, building trust with personal photos and an About page, and adding interactive features such as CTA buttons and contact forms make for high-quality sites.Do you have any questions about building DIY websites? The Korea Question Essays - Geography Of Asia, East Asia, Asia The Korea Question What is national identity? This question may seem to be to simple to even bother answering. The easy answer is that national history is the events in a nations past that, when put together, unify all aspects of life in that nation. From this rough definition it would make sense that all of the nations in the world have a national identity. However, this question is not as black and white as it may seem. Some people believe that a nation whose history is nothing more than occupation by other countries should not be considered an independent nation. This can be seen very well in the case of Korea, which ahs had a history filled with Chinese, Japanese, and western influence. However, though Korea has strong ties to all of these imperialistic powers; it still shows aspects that are uniquely Korean. Korea has a history that includes dominance, subservience, and reemergence. The people of the Korean peninsula have had a very colorful history. Through the period of the Later Bronze Age the Korean peninsula experienced significant political development. Perhaps the most important of these developments was the creation of the walled-town states. The six walled-town states of the Korean peninsula are seen in Chinese records. The most advanced of these states was Chao-hsien. The early leaders of Chao-hsien called themselves tangun wanguom to signify both their descent from the divine creator and their monarchial status . The leaders of Choa-hsien soon realized that in order to maintain power over the peninsula they would need to join with other walled-town states to ward off invaders. By the fourth century BCE the confederated kingdom was created and served as an extended political unit of substantial military power . Shortly after the confederated kingdom was created it was challenged by the powerful Yen faction, a powerful contender from northern China. The Yen people asserted that Chao-hsien was arrogant and cruel. By the fourth century BCE the Yen faction invaded the Korean peninsula resulting in the inevitable decline of Chao-hsien. The Yen invasion stimulated new waves of Chinese traffic in official, administrators, traders and military personnel . Chao-hsien was able to use the Chinese influence to strengthen allowing it to subdue its neighbors. This new strength ushered in the Three Kingdoms Period. The Korean peninsula was divided into three sections, Kingdoms, known as Kroguryo, Paekche, and Silla. As is the case throughout history, one of these kingdoms eventually rose to become the dominant force on the peninsula. In the sixth century BCE Silla felt confident enough to expand its domain. It consumed the small neighboring tribes in southern Korea and then prepared to take on the other kingdoms of Kroguryo and Paekche. In the end Sillas goals of unification did not come to fruition. Much of Manchuria remained out of the reach of Sillas armies. However, it was Sillas unified rule over the bulk of the peninsula that laid the basis for the subsequent course of Korean history . Throughout its history the Korean peninsula has always been crucially affected by political developments on the Asian land mass. This phenomenon can be seen during the chaos that accompanied the end of Tang and the Five Dynasties. It was then that Wang Kon was able to overthrow Silla and establish the Koryo dynasty. The Koryo dynasty found itself having to ward off many enemies. In the beginning they felt pressures from the Mongol barbarians who eventually allied with Koryo becoming their sole protector. In the last century and a half they saw the emergence of the Japanese marauders intent on raiding the peninsula. After the collapse of the Mongol Empire Koryo fate was imminent. They had no way to fight off invaders and were bound for failure. The peninsula may have slipped into foreign control if General Yi Songye hadnt mounted an offensive against the Ming armies. In 1932 Koryo finally fell opening the door for Songye and the Yi Dynasty in Korea . The Yi Dynasty, the longest in Korean history saw many revolutionary ideas introduced to Korea. Songye had become not only a military leader but also the leader of a new literati class. Songye encouraged a wide range of cultural activities such as

System Architecture Tasks Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

System Architecture Tasks - Assignment Example The company’s website is the face of its operations in the digital platform. It is the primary point of contact with prospective customers, and since the internet has presented itself as a platform for integrating and automating almost all marketing and sales operations, the web has been elevated from simply a component of marketing mix to being the core of marketing strategies. A web-centric strategy comprises of websites, web portals, and systematic marketing solutions. The motivations behind the development of a web-centric website lie in segmentations, tracking and capturing of leads that improve business performance (Cashman, 2012). PROPOSED SOLUTION SRC desires to develop a Training Management System to manage its new training centre. The development of the system should follow web-centric principles. Specifically, it should integrate three components; web, web portals and systematic virtual marketing tools. The developed system should segment the market to streamline th e purchase information decisions. Further, it should add value to the prospects application and automatically recognize and present the prospect with segment-specific information. The system should also track other qualification data associated with the prospect for successful identification of contact information. Prospects give out contact information in order to receive high quality information, services and tools from the website. DEFENSE With web portals the identified prospect can perform a broad range of applications, , information and services such as pricing, orders, technical support and vital business operations. Virtual relationship marketing is the last strategic process for producing the steady stream of high-probability chances the business requires. The training information system will leverage systematic marketing solutions to constantly create and nurture a trusted, long-term relationship with the prospects until business is transacted. SCALABILITY Scalability refe rs to the ability of an information system to continue functioning well in spite of additional content in size and volume necessitated by business and customer demands. Re-scaling is usually done to a larger size or volume and may entail a product itself or objects movement to a new context. For instance, scaling can be done to storage, RAM or processing speed or a total shift of the object to a new operating system with improved operations and security (Cashman, 2012). Scalability of information systems is the ability of an information system to acquire more resources and continue to perform normally. A business will therefore, invest in an information system with the premise that the resource will grow as the business grows. Scalability is defined as a function of resources it can handle and time. If the system will still be affordable, efficient and practically workable in the next five years, then it is considered scalable and organizations to agree upon this premise. Business h ave ventured into bigger and better resources such as Microsoft Exchange, Sharepoint, or Windows server as a result of the flexibility of expansion it accords. For businesses such as that of SCR, scalability is an important and fundamental aspect. PROPOSED SOLUTION In the case of SCR, a new Training Management System is said to be scalable if it can accommodate expansion to serve new

What Is Human Reproductive Cloning Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words

What Is Human Reproductive Cloning - Essay Example As the report declares the most prominent theoretical source of objections in the ‘deontological’ school of thought is the moral philosophy of Immanuel Kant, the German eighteenth-century thinker who stressed the ideas of ‘transcendental’ freedom and autonomy. To define his idea of the transcendental autonomy of human reason, Kant presented several formulations of what he called the ‘categorical imperative.’ This is the moral law that he thought people should obey without exceptions. The general idea and two specific formulations of this overarching rule, and see how they can (or cannot) be employed in objections to human reproductive cloning. This paper discusses that Kant’s first formulation, which is of more use, was â€Å"Act only according to that maxim whereby you can at the same time will that it should become a universal law†. The definition of the goodness of genetic diversity does make some sense, but it does not support the Kantian objection to cloning. We can permit cloning in cases where people cannot have children by any other means without allowing it to become the only way of making babies – and without disturbing the human gene pool in any way. Besides, it could be argued that whatever accidental advantages the variety of genetic constitutions has had in the past could in the future be secured by considered genetic enhancements. The more Kantian way to proceed is to say that genetic diversity is good, because it is natural, or intrinsically linked with human reproduction.

The beginning of my junior year in high school Essay Example for Free

The beginning of my junior year in high school Essay It was the beginning of my junior year in high school. I was just becoming accustomed to Knoxville, which I have called my new home since moving from Orlando, Florida my sophomore year in high school. I had been making friends and adjusting myself to this new environment, and now it finally felt like home. As I was settling in., I realized something; I didn’t know exactly whom I was or what I wanted to accomplish in life. I had my most important year of high school dawning upon me and no time to spare. In order to discover what i was interested in, I joined the National Honor Society at my school. I felt it was an appropriate way to contribute back to my community as well as explore new hobbies and meet great people along the way. During late September, I saw a great opportunity unfolding before my eyes. A local barbeque restaurant called Buddy’s Bar-B-Q was hosting a fundraising cancer awareness race around the Worlds Fair Park in downtown Knoxville. My father being a cancer doctor, this could not be turned down. When I arrived at the event, I saw an old man sitting alone on a bench, so I decided to join him. He saw my volunteer shirt and thanked me graciously. His name was Jim and he described how he recently lost his wife to breast cancer, and had no children or close relatives to help ease the situation. He asked why I decided to volunteer for this race, and I explained my journey through school and how my father happened to be a cancer doctor. Before the race started, Jim pulled me aside and told me to remember one thing in life, â€Å"No matter how bad you feel rejected and alone in life, there is always someone who can help† From that day on I did not think about Jim being an old wise man just shedding advice to somebody young, yet I saw him as a man who even though suffered the worst, still managed to live out all his life to the fullest. I realized that there is no way to map out the rest of my life; life is full of opportunities that have to be seized and experience can be taken from them. The University of Florida demonstrates a gateway to a world full of diversity and opportunity that I will successfully be able to grasp and take away great things from.

Erik Erikson Theory of Development

Erik Erikson Theory of Development Human life is determined by so many factors which contribute to how they behave. Every human being has a personality which many claim that it might be caused by genes. There are circumstances that go unnoticed which contribute to how people behave. These events run from childhood to adulthood and that is what the theory of development/ model of early childhood development as created by Erik Erikson try to explain. This paper highlights on child development and factors that determines his/her behavior as explained by Erikson in his theory of development. This theory explains why people behave as they do which is contributed by environment, interaction and response. There are eight stages and in each, there are both positive influences as well as negative which give either result. The stages contribute to physical, emotion, intelligence and social features of an individual. Theory of Development/Model of Early Childhood Development The theory of development came up in 20th century when interest to change the perception of children being small adults and aim to discover the abnormal behaviors became a concern. There have been many theories on this ground like Freuds psychosexual stages which focused on mental disorders in childhood. The Piagets stages of cognitive development attributed to Jean Piaget who had a view that children and adults never thought the same. John B.Watson, B. F. Skinner and Ivan Pavlov developed the behavioral child development theories which test on the influence of the environment to behavior (Thomas, 2005). Lastly, Eriksons stages of psychosocial development by Erik Erikson was developed which encompassed the whole human life. Each stage in his theory is presented with conflict whose success or failure impacts on the personality (Muzi, 2000). Erik Erikson tries to explain the development of personality and behavior in people mostly attributable to stages in life. Most of his work is developed and related to Freuds; he has only made his complex and covers from childhood to adulthood (Baldwin, 2008). Development takes place in all years in human life according to him. Exposure, training, reciprocation and experience determine the effects of these stages on a persons behavior and personality either negative or positive. Each stage is presented with equal positive and negative effects and Erik warns against use of the word achievement and encourages on the word acquisition of personality. He built his work on Freuds to make it more meaningful and accessible. His work shows the tasks that need to be accomplished in different ages for smooth living (Santrock, 2010). In his model, he developed eight stages using age range which is not fixed hence there are overlaps. In any of the stages that is not well partaken, it may present problems in the future. The first stage according to his psychosocial development is trust vs. mistrust with a virtue of hope and experienced in infants between 0 to I year. In this stage, there is total reliance of the child from the mother. Parents act as a guide as child understands the world. If the child is exposed to the basic needs of the stage, he/she may have trust on the world. If the opposite happens, the child gains a sense of mistrust about the world. This is the stage in which the infant understands about the world and its people. The writer advocates for warmth, sleeping and feeding amongst others (Thomas, 2005). Stage two is autonomy vs. shame and doubt with a virtue of will and is experienced in toddlers between age 2 and 3 years. The child is on an exploration about the surroundings. At this stage, it depends with the parents encouragement as well as strictness. The infants depend on the caregivers reaction to their actions. They can move and the muscle coordination is increased. They can attend to some of their issues without bothering the caregivers and if encouraged, they gain a sense of autonomy but if discouraged, they may develop doubts and shame about their ability. It encompasses independence and confidence both of mind and oneself. The writer advocates for toilet training, aiding their walking and showing encouragement (Baldwin, 2008). In initiative vs. guilt which is the third stage, its virtue is purpose and is in children between 3 to 5 years i.e. preschool. It is based on tasks for purposes and the children learn about nature like gravity. The guilt may be caused by failure to achieve or doing the wrong thing. They have a multiple of choices about the activities to do which may be fit for them or unfit hence affecting the juniors i.e. doing what is beyond their capability. The responses they receive from juniors have effects on their initiative. If they feel motivated, they can try new thing which give confidence and achievement and if they are demoralized, they can feel guilty. The activities undertaken in this stage may result to both negative and positive behaviors. If the child fails in most of his/her activities, frustration may develop hence may depict negative behaviors. Erik encourages on play and adventure as the management techniques (Slentz Krogh, 2008). The fourth stage is industry vs. inferiority with a virtue of competence and is between ages 6 to 11 years i.e. childhood. At this stage, children are now aware of themselves and apply more logic to practical things. They aim at doing right, being responsible and attending to their issues with no or minimal assistance. The children are recognized with groups either through culture or differences in personality. The activities undertaken here are complex, meaningful and purposeful. The spirit of cooperation is developed and every child discovers his/her unique capabilities. This stage takes place mostly when many people are in school and is considered as a vital transition in ones life because everything else is built on it. The main techniques are parents, teachers and friends encouragement as well as schooling (Newcombe, 2010). Identity vs. role confusion comes as the fifth stage. It has an ego quality of fidelity and it is between 12 to 19 years concentrated on adolescence. It is a transition from childhood to adulthood in which there is confusion in roles. It brings a sense of identity, what has transpired from stage one to stage four can be termed as mare childhood but now reality of who they are and what the society views and expects of them is vivid. There is what is expected in the future and it is at this stage that matching of the past and the expectations is done. This creates the personality of who you want to be. The sexuality is well developed and there are self ideologies which may or may not be affected by past stages (Slentz Krogh, 2008). Depending on the results from fourth stage, the fifth stage may take place at different ages, some as early as 17 and 18 while others as late as 20 and 21.There are more experiments before the real identity is established. Adolescents are in a position to differ with their parents and caregivers on some issues like politics and religion. Many parents may try to influence decisions made by their children at this stage like the career to pursue. This may block their self establishment hence have an influenced identity because this stage requires total independence. It can be established by identifying with peers and groups (Baldwin, 2008). The stage of intimacy vs. isolation has the value of love which is established between 20 to 40 years, among young adults. Some bit of identity vs. role confusion may be experienced at early years of this stage due to late identity establishment. Identification with friends is most here and since there is experience of pain, some may isolate themselves due to fear of break ups and rejection. They grow a defense mechanism that that can destroy what seems dangerous to them. With creation of intimacy, people graduate to commitments which call for compromises and sacrifices. This is where marriage is established forming a long-term commitment which brings both emotional and physical closeness. Failure to experience intimacy may cause isolation which may be due to rejection or personal reasons (Slentz Krogh, 2008). There is need for social life, friends and lovers to achieve satisfaction in this stage. The seventh stage is generativity vs. stagnation with a virtue of care and is experienced between 45 to 65 years, middle adulthood. It has more social works and responsibility focused on the siblings as they are the future generation. These adults act as caregivers of the young ones and it is a warning that their success or failure in any of the previous stages should not affect on the way they influence the siblings (Thomas, 2005). They have a lot of tasks to do to the young ones and also the children have set expectations about them. Responsibility extends to others and the ability to give it is generativity while inability is the stagnation. It is associated with works of giving back to the community and through care. Production is expected from these mid adults both in terms of work and participation to the community development. The final stage is ego integrity vs. despair which is experienced in senior adults of age 65 and above. Its virtue guide is wisdom and it is more of a review of how the life has been and what he/she has achieved and need for rest. These individuals feel either rejected or accepted depending on what they have done, the impact of their actions on the community and the world at large (Slentz Krogh, 2008) It is the stage at which they make peace with people, the creator and also need peace of mind. If their lives have been successful and full of accomplishments, the adult feels full of integrity. If the life has been a total failure, they feel despair. The review is focused on the achievements made which could be in one way or another, an improvement to the world, making it a better place. This stage also allows an adult to give back to the community what he/she had not yet given i.e. being responsible and making up for any mistakes or harms inflicted to both the people and world at lar ge (Thomas, 2005). In all these stages of life, there are two extremes one positive and the other negative and there is need for an individual to balance both of them to have a balanced living. Each stage acts as a transition to the next and it is important to accomplish the tasks in each stage, failure to which may result to problems in the future. The age gaps provided may not be fixed depending on different reviews as well as individuals. They used as a guiding way to place all the stages in a life of a human being. There are individuals that may be late to graduate to the next stage hence carrying the previous stage tasks (Slentz Krogh, 2008). Others graduate faster than presented in years in the Eriks theory. This creates the differences in ages when a given stage starts and when it ends. The most affected stage is identity vs. role confusion in which many girls start at age 9 which is below the provide age of 12 to 19 years. There is need for caregivers to ensure proper balancing of the conflict s especially in the stages that they have control of for good life development

How To Manage Conflict Essay

Managing conflict is never easy, whether you’re trying to resolve a conflict of your own or trying to help two people settle a dispute. The most important thing to know is that the longer you let the situation continue, the worse it’ll be when it’s time to resolve it. So take a deep breath, maintain your cool, and get ready to find a solution that can make everyone (reasonably) happy. 1. Make a plan for meeting. If two people are genuinely in conflict and you want to help them — or they need your help — then you should plan a time to meet that would make everybody happy. Of course, you may just walk into a conflict and have to solve it on the spur of the moment, but hopefully you have some time to plan in advance. If so, pick a time and place that works for both people, and make sure that they are both invested in solving the conflict. If there’s real trouble, then the sooner you can get together, the better. Ad 2. Let each person state his or her side of the story. If you are in charge of managing a conflict, whether it’s because you’re a manager or because you’re helping two people figure out their issues, you have to be an active listener. Let each person express his or her position and listen with compassion and care until each person has stated his or her feelings and desires. Don’t let the people interrupt each other and make it clear that each person will take turns fully explaining him or her self.[1] Make sure that both people are really listening to each other instead of just waiting until their turn to have their say. If necessary, have one person repeat some of the main points the other person made, so it’s clear that they both have an understanding of how each person is feeling. 3. 3 Make it clear that you are there to help resolve, not solve. The people who are in conflict must figure out how to move past their problems on their own, not look to you for a magical solution that will make all of their problems go away. You should make this clear from the start so both parties know that they have to work hard and listen actively before they can move  forward. You are there to mediate so the conflict doesn’t get out of control and so that both parties can look at the situation with more objectivity and control, but that doesn’t mean you will provide them with an answer. 4 Maintain your objectivity. Even if you think that Lucy is obviously in the right and Mary is 100% wrong, it is not your position to say so. If you jump in on Lucy’s side, then Mary will feel like you’re both ganging up against her and the conflict will be even further from a resolution. Instead, keep your own personal opinions and ideas out of it and treat each person’s perspective with compassion and respect. Even if one person is more â€Å"right† than the other, they both still have to reach a solution that can reasonably please both of them. If you’re mediating a conflict, then you should pay equal attention to both people. Let each person spend about the same amount of time speaking and make points that support both people instead of just focusing on one person or the other. Maintain a neutral expression, and try not to look put off or skeptical if one person is stating something you don’t agree with at all. 5. 5 Be a calming force. One of your primary tasks is to help both people keep their cool. Manage their stress levels, their anger, and their emotions to the best of your ability. If someone is getting too heated, raising his or her voice, and getting visibly angry or upset, take a five-minute break or ask that person to take a few deep breaths and wait until he or she can speak calmly. You can only find a solution if both people stay calm and can see clearly.[2] If the conversation is not going down a constructive path, and both people have resorted to name calling and cursing and just criticizing each other back and forth without getting anywhere, then you should intervene and get the conversation back on track. You can say something like, â€Å"Let’s focus on what’s important here,† or â€Å"We’re just not getting anywhere with this kind of talk.† 6 Figure out the source of the tension. Once both people have stated their  cases, you can help them figure out what is really at stake. They may think that they are really angry at each other because of financial tension, but they may really be upset because of a lack of communication. Be as specific. Have each person discuss all of the things that are troubling him or her and see if you can really find the root of the problem. Be patient. It may take a bit of digging — and some pain — to get there. If you can put it in simple terms, something like, â€Å"Bob feels that Mary is micromanaging his project† or â€Å"Sara feels like Jim doesn’t spend enough quality time with her,† then you can begin to tackle the problem better than if you just knew that the two people were angry with each other. 7 Work together to find a solution. Once you have all agreed on the source of the tension and the problem that is at hand, you can begin to find a solution. Remember that both people do have to agree about the nature of the real problem to be able to find an effective solution. It may not be readily apparent, and you may need some perseverance and creativity to get there, but eventually, you should be able to find a way to make both people (reasonably) happy. Here are some potential solutions you may find and ways to state them gracefully: â€Å"It seems like both of you are having trouble living together. Sara may be a bit too focused on being neat, while Mary may be a bit careless when it comes to doing chores. To solve the problem, you should set out a list of guidelines for how you can both keep the house clean without running into trouble. If you both agree to do the things on the list, then you can stay happy in your living space.† â€Å"It seems that Bob has been managing Clark a little too closely. To avoid this in the future, Bob and Clark can discuss the objectives of a project in great detail and can decide on times when they can both check in about the status of the project; this will make Bob feel at ease about where the project is going, while giving Clark a little bit of breathing room.† 8 Make a plan. Once you’ve found a resolution for the problem, you can set out specific guidelines for making it happen. Remember that both people have to be invested in finding this solution. You can set a timeline for achieving  these goals and have both people put it in writing so they feel that it will actually happen. Here are some ways it can happen: â€Å"Mary and Sara should sit down and discuss which things in the house have to stay clean at all times, and which parts should be cleaned occasionally for an extra nice touch. Once you agree on the daily chores that really need to be done, you can make a chart of rotating tasks.† â€Å"Bob and Clark should meet for an hour before every new project, taking at least two detailed pages of notes so that Clark has enough direction to go off on his own. They should meet every three days for half an hour to discuss the progress of the project.† 9 If both parties agree to disagree, help them part amicably. Maybe neither person, or one of the people, is unwilling to budge, and after much discussion, you haven’t moved past square one. If that’s the case, then you should still make it so that one person understands where the other is coming from and that they can leave the situation without extra hostility or tension. Maybe Bob can’t help but breathe down Clark’s neck or Sara will always be messy no matter what; if that’s the case, then they have to find a way to coexist or make a smart plan for parting ways. Consider the fact that maybe both people just aren’t ready to resolve the conflict and need more time to cool off. If you feel like the argument is getting nowhere because both people are too heated and emotional, not because they refuse to budge from their positions, then consider asking both people reschedule your meeting for a time when both parties can think more clearly. 10 End the conversation on a positive note. Whether both parties have reached a healthy conclusion or have agreed to disagree, you should end the situation on an optimistic note so neither person feels defeated. If both parties are feeling friendly, go out for a coffee or a beer; if both parties are still very angry, try to diffuse the situation with a bit of humor and see if they’ll at least shake hands and stay cordial. If emotions are too heated, then it’s time for everyone to back off for a bit, but if the vibe is positive, make the people feel good about having the conversation. Remind both parties that, however unpleasant it may be to discuss a conflict, that  they have been mature and done the right thing by deciding to resolve the situation instead of staying angry or avoiding the tension. Method 2 of 2: Managing Your Own Conflicts 1. Face the conflict head-on. If you’re dealing with a conflict of your own, then the worst thing you can do is run and hide, waiting for the conflict to get bigger and bigger until it’s almost impossible to resolve it. Sure, conflict is no fun, whether you’re butting heads with a co-worker or your long-term boyfriend, but remind yourself that if you brush your problems under the rug, then they are guaranteed to get worse. So take a deep breath and accept that you have to deal with it.[3] That being said, pick your battles. If you feel like your boyfriend has been neglecting you, then speak up; but if you feel like you don’t like the way he loads the dishwater, maybe it’s better to hold off. 2 Don’t tell everyone about it. It’s okay to seek advice from a close friend or another co-worker if you genuinely don’t know what to do. But if you feel the urge to complain to every person in sight about the conflict just so you can gossip or get some anger off your chest, then you’re only getting yourself worked up and possibly putting your relationship in jeopardy if the other person finds out about what you’ve been saying. If you do need advice, then talk to just one or two people whom you really trust so you can have some meaningful direction.[4] Think about it; how would you feel if you heard your co-worker was telling everyone in the office about your problems without talking to you about it? That kind of behavior is guaranteed to make you feel worse. 3 Use â€Å"I† statements. â€Å"I† statements are crucial for solving a conflict as objectively as possible. â€Å"I† statements make your feelings and motives clear and can help the other person see your side of the story without feeling accused or persecuted; â€Å"You† statements make the other party feel like he or  she is on the chopping block and will make him or her feel much more defensive. Here are some ways to make useful â€Å"I† statements: â€Å"I feel like we haven’t been spending enough time together† is more effective than â€Å"You are always neglecting me.† â€Å"I feel like I’ve been picking up the majority of the work on the project,† is more effective than â€Å"You have been making me do all of the work on this project.† 4 Be specific. This doesn’t mean you have to list the 90 things that the person has done to hurt you or to cause the conflict. In fact, this kind of behavior will only make the person feel worse, like he’s being picked apart. Instead, stick to two or three concrete scenarios that can illustrate what you mean to make the person see the situation from your perspective. Here are some examples: â€Å"I was really hurt when you left my birthday party early to hang out with your friends instead of spending more time with me.† â€Å"I spent ten hours on the Roberts report while you only worked on the cover page.†

The Hardest ACT Reading Questions Ever

The Hardest ACT Reading Questions Ever SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips If you’re aiming for a top score on the ACT Reading section, you probably want to know what the hardest questions look like so you’re prepared for everything the test throws at you. In this article, I’ll walk you through the answers to some of the toughest questions I’ve seen on the ACT Reading section. Why exactly are they so hard? How do you tackle them? How well will you do? Challenge yourself for that top score. Detail Questions Detail Questions will ask you to paraphrase or analyze a specific part of the passage. These questions can be difficult because they require a strong understanding of the author's specfic viewpoint and a high level of reading comprehension. Here’s one of the hardest detail questions about the narrator’s point of view that I’ve come across on the ACT: In the last paragraph, a comparison is made between "diminished excellence" and "flawed competence." From the narrator's point of view, the conditions are different because the one is: F. a source of sorrow while the other is a source of pride.G. based in the family while the other is based in the self.H. inherent in the environment while the other is inherent in the individual.J. a sign that the individual can improve the world while the other is a sign that the individual can't. This is the comparison the question refers to: We plan makers are accustomed to things turning out not-quite-as-good-as-we-had-in-mind. Our world view includes the â€Å"diminished excellence† component. Diminished excellence is a condition of the world and therefore never an occasion for sorrow, whereas flawed competence comes out of character and therefore is frequently the reason for the bowed head, the furrowed brow. How do we go about solving a question like this? First, we need to establish what the narrator is saying about the difference between diminished excellence and flawed competence. What is diminished excellence, according to the passage? It’s a â€Å"condition of the world† and â€Å"never an occasion for sorrow†.Diminished excellence is not something to be sad about because it’s out of our control and exists naturally in the world. Ok, how about flawed competence? In contrast, flawed competence â€Å"comes out of character† and is a reason for â€Å"the bowed head†.Flawed competence is a part of the individual, not an immutable condition of the world, so it can be cause for distress. Ok, we know the difference. Now let’s examine the answer choices. Choice F:a source of sorrow while the other is a source of pride Well, one of them is a source of some degree of sorrow (flawed competence), but neither is a source of pride, so this doesn’t work. Nope, this is an irrelevant answer! Choice G:based in the family while the other is based in the self Again, this is sort of half-correct in that flawed competence is based in the self. However, diminished excellence is not based in the family - it’s based in the world at large. Nothing in this answer choice describes diminished excellence. Cross this one out too! Choice H:inherent in the environment while the other is inherent in the individual This seems likely.Diminished excellence is described as a â€Å"condition of the world†, so it’s inherent in the environment.Flawed competence â€Å"comes out of character†, so it’s inherent in the individual. Keep this one! Choice J:a sign that the individual can improve the world while the other is a sign that the individual can’t This is a confusing answer choice, because we don’t see either of the conditions described as signs of anything in the passage.Diminished excellence could be interpreted as a sign that the individual can’t improve the world, but flawed competence certainly isn’t any kind of sign that an individual CAN improve it. This answer is a weird concept jumble - get rid of it! Choice H is our answer! This question was tough because it asked us to consider and compare two complicated ideas in the passage. We had to grapple with abstract concepts as well as be very specific with our answer choice. You can see, however, that when we closely examine the direct evidence and definitions provided, it becomes very clear which answers should be eliminated. If you come across unfamiliar concepts in the passage that you need to understand to answer a question, sometimes it's helpful to write down their definitions in a simpler form next to the question so you can stay focused. Sometimes you have to look at things from the author's point of view on the ACT, even if you can tell he's someone who wears ugly glasses and stares off into the sunset wondering why he wasted the best years of his life. Development and Function Questions Development and function questions ask about the structure of the reading passage and how certain lines or paragraphs contribute to its meaning. These questions can be difficult because you have to have a strong understanding of the argument presented in the passage and how each piece of the passage fits into that argument. Here’s one of the hardest ACT questions I’ve seen in this category: The author uses the events listed in lines 77-79 primarily to: F. show how weather-related disasters threatened the survival of Western civilization.G. criticize subsistence-level agriculture as being too dependent on the weather.H. illustrate how environmental determinism operated in the Little Ice Age.J. suggest the part that climate shifts may have had in producing modern Europe. Here are is the paragraph we need to reference: Consider, for instance, the food crises that engulfed Europe during the Little Ice Age - the great hunger of 1315 to 1319, the food dearths of 1741, and 1816, "the year without a summer" - to mention only a few. These crises in themselves did not threaten the continued existence of Western civilization, but they surely played an important role in the formation of modern Europe. Some of these crises resulted from climactic shifts, others from human ineptitude or disastrous economic or political policy; many from a combination of all three. Environmental determinism may be intellectually bankrupt, but climate change is the ignored player on the historical stage. I have the whole paragraph copied here, rather than just the lines in the question, because it’s necessary to read beyond the lines to get the right answer. That’s part of what makes this question difficult. All right - how do we solve this? First, let's figure out what the question is asking. What is the primary purpose of lines 77-79?It’s important not to miss the world "primary" in this question because some of the answer choices are tricky. They might support the author’s point, but they’re not her primary reason for using those lines. Now let’s go through the answer choices and see which one works. Choice F:show how weather-related disasters threatened the survival of Western civilization If you just read the lines mentioned in the question, you might think this answer was plausible. This is why it’s important to make sure to read the whole paragraph surrounding the lines to get the context. In the next sentence, the author specifically says these crises â€Å"did not threaten the continued existence of Western civilization†. This is an opposite answer - get rid of it! Choice G:criticize subsistence-level agriculture as being too dependent on the weather Hmm - it does seem based on these lines that subsistence-level agriculture was too dependent on the weather. But was that the primary point the author was trying to make by citing these crises? No, this answer misses the larger point even if it makes sense on a factual level. Eliminate it! Choice H:illustrate how environmental determinism operated in the Little Ice Age This answer choice would be easier to understand if you had the whole passage to look at, but the Little Ice Age is a time period of climate instability that was described earlier in the passage. These crises did occur during that time period, so that part makes sense. But is the author trying to support environmental determinism? She says it’s â€Å"intellectually bankrupt† at the end of the paragraph. This answer is slightly off - cross it out! Choice J:suggest the part that climate shifts might have had in producing modern Europe This seems right. The paragraph says the crises â€Å"surely played an important role in the formation of modern Europe†, so that's a pretty close paraphrase of this answer choice. This one’s a winner! Choice J is our answer! You’ll notice that the correct answer choice was the last one, so this question could be particularly difficult if you were rushing on the test. Some of the other choices also seem partially right at first glance. That’s why reading carefully and making sure every part of an answer makes sense is so important. That guy on the right is SO done with everyone he knows dying from malnutrition. Inference Questions Perhaps the most difficult ACT Reading questions are those that ask you to make inferences about the passage. This requires more developed extended reasoning skills and a deep understanding of the points being made by the author. Meaning in context questions are a subset of inference questions. They will ask you to look at specific lines in a passage to infer and then paraphrase their meaning. Here is an example of a very difficult meaning in context question on the ACT: Which of the following statements best paraphrases lines 5-8? A. The imagination lacks value and should be ignored in favor of paying attention to the actual world.B. Reason can enhance the imagination but at the expense of experience in the actual world.C. Rather than become isolated, the imagination should connect to the actual world at least occasionally.D. Reason, not the imagination, is the best way to appreciate and enrich the actual world. Here are the lines we’ll need to reference: A mind risks real ignorance for the sometimes paltry prize of an imagination enriched. The trick of reason is to get the imagination to seize the actual world - if only from time to time. This question is so difficult because the lines it references deal with a somewhat confusing and high-level concept. The answer choices also combine a lot of different concepts that are included in the lines but don't necessarily answer the question correctly. Ok, time to solve this. First, let’s try and understand what the lines are saying. What does the first sentence mean? A mind risks real ignorance for the sometimes paltry prize of an imagination enriched. It seems like it's saying that people often gain an enriched imagination at the expense of their knowledge of the real world.â€Å"Real ignorance† is the price they pay for an â€Å"imagination enriched†. Ok, how about the second sentence? The trick of reason is to get the imagination to seize the actual world - if only from time to time. It's saying that in order to overcome the problem in the first sentence, you have to get your imagination to connect with or â€Å"seize† the real world sometimes. It seems like we have a pretty good understanding of the sentiment in the passage: imagination can make you lose touch with the real world if you don’t bridge the gap between the two sometimes. Now let's go through the answer choices. Choice A:The imagination lacks value and should be ignored in favor of paying attention to the actual world. Hmm this sounds pretty extreme. Even though the author does say that you shouldn’t totally lose yourself in imagination, there’s no mention of ignoring it.She says imagination should â€Å"seize the actual world†, so the two are compatible. Imagination doesn’t â€Å"lack value†. This answer is incorrect! Choice B:Reason can enhance the imagination but at the expense of experience in the actual world. This is definitely an opposite answer. How can reason enhance your imagination if you are sacrificing real world experience? The author’s point is that reason should allow you to enhance your imagination by occasionally putting imagination in the context of your experiences in the real world. Eliminate this one! Choice C:Rather than become isolated, the imagination should connect to the actual world at least occasionally. Looking promising. The author definitely says that the imagination shouldn’t be isolated from the real world or the imaginer â€Å"risks real ignorance†.She also says imagination should â€Å"seize the actual world - if only from time to time†. This seems synonymous with connecting â€Å"to the actual world at least occasionally†. Keep this one! Choice D:Reason, not the imagination, is the best way to appreciate and enrich the real world. This is a plausible interpretation of what the author says, but it’s still not correct. It seems like she does believe that imagination can cause you to lose touch with the real world, so it might not be the best way to appreciate or enrich the real world. However, that’s not the point specifically being made in these sentences. Eliminate this one! Choice C is our answer! These answer choices were very difficult because almost all of them included a plausible element, even though only one was close enough to the meaning of the lines to answer the question correctly. This is common with inference or meaning in context questions, which is why reading the question carefully and being ruthless about eliminating answers that aren’t a perfect match is so crucial! What is the "actual world" anyway? How do we know our imaginations aren't, like, just as real? Duuuude. Review The hardest questions on the ACT Reading section ask you to analyze abstract concepts and paraphrase complex viewpoints expressed in passages. Often the answer choices provided will seem plausible or provide a statement that is true but does not directly answer the question being asked. 10 Fleshy Words

10 Fleshy Words 10 Fleshy Words 10 Fleshy Words By Maeve Maddox Latin words meaning flesh and fleshly (carnis, carnalis), have given English several words, some of which refer to human flesh and some to the flesh of animals. 1. carnage noun: a heap of dead bodies, especially of men killed in battle. The Anglo-Saxon poem â€Å"The Battle of Maldon† describes the carnage that ensues when the local militia confronts Viking raiders. The fates of several Anglo-Saxon warriors are depicted- notably that of Earl Byrhtnoth: he dies valiantly, urging his soldiers forward and commending his soul to God. Carnage is also used in a non-military context to describe the bloody aftermath of any killing event: Firefighters have described the carnage and confusion they found when they arrived on the scene of the Paddington rail crash in which 31 people died. 2. carnal adjective: pertaining to the body. In Medieval Latin, a frater carnalis was a biological brother. In modern usage, carnal refers to the sensual or sexual aspects of the body. The noun is carnality and the adverb is carnally. Detectives  charged  the 27-year-old with felony  carnal knowledge  of a juvenile. In religious thought, carnal is the opposite of spiritual. A carnal mind is not necessarily a sinful mind. However, all sin is carnal. A carnal mind is simply a mind that is governed entirely by the senses. 3. carnation adjective: a light rosy pink; noun: a flower, scientific name Dianthus, which may be shades of pink or red. The plural carnations is used as an art term: â€Å"those parts in a painting that represent the naked skin.† Vecelli observed that a colorist ought to manipulate white, black and red, and that the carnations cannot be done in a first painting, but by replicating various tints and mingling the colors. 4. carnelian noun: a flesh-colored, deep red, or reddish-white variety of chalcedony; adjective: of the color of a carnelian. My stepmother was, if rather richly, always plainly dressed, in the sober Quaker mode; almost  her  only ornament was a large  carnelian brooch, set in flowered flat gold. 5. carnival noun: originally, the medieval religious celebration preceding Ash Wednesday and the beginning of Lent. The word derives from a phrase meaning â€Å"the putting away of flesh.† In modern usage, a carnival is any season of feasting, revelry, or indulgence. In North American English, a carnival is a fun fair with rides and entertainment booths. 6. carnivore noun: (Latin carnivorus, â€Å"flesh-eating†) A carnivore is an animal that eats only meat. People whose diet includes meat are often jokingly referred to as carnivores, in contrast to vegans and vegetarians. My husband and children are carnivores, and yes, I do prepare their food for them. 7. carnivorous adjective: (Latin carni, â€Å"flesh† + vorus, â€Å"devouring†) The accent is on the second syllable. Since neither humans nor chimpanzees are truly carnivorous- most traditional human societies eat a diet made up mostly of plant foods- we are considered omnivores. Note: An omnivore feeds on a diet of both plant and animal origin. 8. charnel house noun: (Old French charnel) a house for dead bodies; a house or vault in which the bones of the dead are piled up. Recently in the Orkney Isles in Scotland, a charnel house has revealed more than 1,000 human bones. 9. incarnation noun: the action of incarnating; the fact of being incarnated or â€Å"made flesh† The  Incarnation  in traditional Christianity is the belief that the second person of the Trinity, also known as God the Son or the Logos (Word), â€Å"became flesh† by being conceived in the womb of Mary. 10. incarnate adjective: clothed or invested with flesh; embodied in flesh; in a human (or animal) bodily form. Until the latter half of the T’ang dynasty, some emperors had even claimed to be the  Buddha incarnate. Want to improve your English in five minutes a day? Warehouse Performance Measurement Case Study Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Warehouse Performance Measurement - Case Study Example Understanding the importance of technology is crucial in value addition. Primarily, much value is lost from damaged goods or expired goods. With scanning technology, it is very easy for an organization to maintain a record of all products, those damaged and those that came in first, ensuring that they are sold earlier than those that come in later. Secondly, another approach that is heavily relied upon conventional warehouses to add value to goods in stock is to increase efficiency. Although technology is mainly centered on improving the value of goods in warehouses, several other strategies are in use by warehouses to add value to their goods. Maintaining efficiency in the storage and withdrawal of goods from the warehouse could help add value of the goods. Primarily, by recurrently monitoring the stock and assessing its safety is vital to adding value to goods. Broken products, for instance, cannot be identified unless there are constant routine checks. Monitoring stock can be done orally and damaged goods can be eliminated from the warehouse, returned to seller or back the manufacturing unit for servicing or to aid in the creation of other products. Recycling damaged goods is a sure way to save on manufacturing and warehousing costs as otherwise, the damaged goods would be disposed. There are several measures of warehouse performance have been established. Primarily, the main measure is efficiency. Efficiently managed warehouses perform well. As such, efficiency in the inventory taking process, space allocation and use, and quality and cost control. Successful warehouses not only have good organization, but also save on costs (Richards, 2011). Efficiency helps reduce on costs of managing a warehouse and hence improves the performance of a warehouse. In addition to the proposed strategies pertaining to the performance of warehouses, several measures are used to evaluate warehouse
